This is my youngest cat, Midnight. He came to live with us in October of 2006. Right before Halloween, the shelter where my husband John volunteered planned to euthanize all the black cats they had, so we applied to foster him. Soon after, he became best friends with John's best girl, Lizzie, securing a permanent home with us.
He's still very shy, having been traumatized by his early months in the shelter and also by dealing with Bob, our jealous, hostile part-Siamese boy. This picture shows a rare unguarded moment not long after he came home with us. Since that time, our 5 cats have worked out an uneasy truce . . . most of the time.
It almost seems inappropriate to offer a picture of one of my babies for the theme "Animal". We think of them as the little furry people who let us live in their house because we feed them and clean their litter boxes. Oh--and also because they love us!
